Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe has revealed that his side’s elimination from the Champions League has affected his sleep. The 20-year-old French sensation and his teammates were left bewildered after the
Red Devils secured a 3-1 victory at Parc des Princes last Wednesday. Despite PSG securing a 2-0 win at Old Trafford in the first leg, Marcus Rashford’s 94th-minute penalty gave Manchester United a 3-1 triumph in France after Romelu Lukaku had struck twice, nullifying Juan Bernat’s goal which would have proved crucial in the tie. With a 3-3 aggregate scoreline, the Red Devils made history by becoming the first club to progress in the Champions League’s knockout stage after suffering a 2-0 home defeat.
In reflection, Paris Saint-Germain has fallen victim to a remontada in the European cup competition for the second time in three years. Back in 2017, Barcelona achieved an unprecedented feat by progressing to the quarter-final after it overturned a 4-0 first-leg loss in Paris to win 6-1 at Camp.
Quite remarkably, Manchester United pulled off the feat without 10 key squad members who were injured on the day as well as a suspended Paul Pogba. With the memory still fresh, Mbappe revealed to Telefoot that the outcome of the clash has made him suffer from insomnia.
“I’m stunned. I haven’t been able to sleep,” he said.
“It’s difficult, we’d worked so hard to get to this point and we’re disappointed. We’re going to try and pick ourselves back up.
“Honestly, it’s hard to give it too much thought because the Champions League was our goal. The stadium was full for a magnificent occasion, we spoiled the party. We didn’t want to ruin it but in the end, we did.”
In addition, Mbappe eased the fears of PSG fans by committing his future to the club despite their struggles in the Champions League.
“I think I will be here next season, that’s guaranteed even.
“With this elimination and all the problems it’s going to create, there’s no point in my personal situation being added to it. So there, that’s clear and precise.”
